Ever wonder what to do with lawn clippings, leaves, and fruit and vegetable scraps that you hate to throw in the garbage? Ever consider composting? Composting is a natural process that breaks down organic material, such as yard and vegetable wastes, into a soil-like material. Finished compost enhances soil, improves soil structure and adds nutrients to gardens and yards. And the best part of composting is it puts to good use wastes that might otherwise end up in a landfill.
We will spend the first 90 minutes learning about basic, backyard composting and other organics management practices. At the workshop, you will learn about bin options, what you can and can’t compost, how to maintain you pile and other ways to handle organic debris, such as grasscycling.
Those interested in learning about more about worm composting can stay for an additional 30 minutes to an hour for worm composting. If you stay for the second part, you will learn how to set up your own worm composting system, including what type of worms work best, what can go in the bin and how to maintain and harvest the castings. Handouts of worm composting information (Link to worm composting how to) and worm sources will be available.
Everyone attending a workshop will receive a FREE copy of Harmonious' Technologies Backyard Composting (available in stores for $6.95). Those attending the workshop will also have the option to purchase a Smith & Hawkins BioStack Composter for $55 (retails for over $100).
