Antioch's Community Action Team

Antioch’s Community Action Team brings neighbors and government together in a partnership to protect the safety of our city’s streets, homes and residents.

The team emerged from neighborhood demands that the City take action against growing crime rates and persistent neighborhood problems. It is a community-based effort built on a foundation of communication and cooperation.

Officers talk – and listen -- to everyone involved in a neighborhood problem, not merely those making a complaint. In many cases, problems are resolved quickly and amicably – reflecting the fact that most people want to be a positive presence in their community.

In a small number of cases, however, problems persist. In these cases where properties or households are the cause of ongoing criminal and/or nuisance activity, the Community Action Team works with all stakeholders involved, including other city departments, landlords, property managers, other governmental agencies, civil courts and others.

The results of this partnership are becoming visible in our city. Neighborhood leaders are calling, writing and attending City Council meetings to celebrate that their streets and parks are once again safe for them to use without fear.

This success received statewide recognition from the California Peace Officers Association and a Certificate of Special Congressional Recognition from Congresswoman Ellen Tauscher. Cities in our region and elsewhere are looking at the CAT Team as a model for their communities.

Of course, there is a great deal of work still to be done. Whatever challenges remain, the City of Antioch will stand alongside the neighbors who have taken a stand against crime in our community. We believe our residents have a right to feel safe in their homes and neighborhoods, and we believe our city government has an obligation to protect this right.
